What is this?

The Diablo Progressive is a newsletter offered as a public service by the Diablo Greens.

This is a place for newcomers to our Valley, or to activism, to find out what our communities have to offer.

It's also a place for local groups to get to know and support each other.

Sweet.  But we aren't Greens.

No problem!  As progressives, we all share some common ground.  Your articles do not imply endorsement of any group other than your own.

So how much does this cost?

Nothing.  Legally, we cannot sell this service, nor can we sell or trade in subscriber info.  We like it that way!  (And we hate ads, so you won't see them, either.)

Welcome to the Diablo Progressive!

What is this worth?

Additional publicity is always a Good Thing.  You also get a one-stop shop for info on what other groups are doing.

We all need each other.

How can we participate?

You are invited to send your group's news and events.  News article writers get full name credit, plus credit for your group.

We also encourage you to tell all your progressive friends and colleagues about The Diablo Progressive, and invite them to subscribe and send articles of their own.

Why I'm Running

Many times, when I tell people I'm active in the Peace and Freedom Party, I get comments like, "Oh, I'm registered that, because it sounds nice," or, "I registered that because I like peace and I like freedom."  I registered Peace and Freedom in 1987, after being "Decline to State" for several years.  I wanted to commit to a party.  So why Peace and Freedom?

Peace and Freedom is a multi-tendency, ballot-status socialist party.  We don't closely define socialism, as a party, but are open to all who think that capitalism is the problem, and that the working class has the answers to the problems that face us.  We have been in the forefront of most of the political, economic and social struggles of today.  We are a feminist party, and oppose sexism in all its guises.  We call for complete gender equality, in the workplace and the home.

Why I Am Running

I am running for the 10th Congressional District seat of California to the United States House of Representatives because I want to help bring into existence the ideas that I think will help us create a "more just and equal society."

For example:

I think that all people should have access to affordable health care coverage.  In the United States, we spend some $7,000 per person on health care coverage which is more money per capita than any other nation in the world yet more than 40 million people in our country are without health care.  In fact, the US is the only developed nation in the world not to provide universal health care coverage to its citizens.  It is time to recognize universal health care as a fundamental right for all citizens of the United States.

Moving forward in 2009

The Diablo Valley progressive community is made up of separate, independent groups that seldom touch base with each other, even when goals overlap, while the greater community dismisses us as "radicals to be ignored."

The Diablo Greens (an affiliate of the Green Party of Contra Costa) would like to help build cooperative relationships among progressive groups in the Diablo Valley.  By combining the strengths of our progressive groups, we hope we can not only get the attention of current officeholders, but also elect candidates for office that represent our progressive values.

Green or not, please join us in this effort to make the Diablo Valley more progressive.
